Does Real Beauty Still Exist ?

In a world of Instagram filters, plumped up lips, contoured faces and let’s not forget the perfect shaped symmetrical eyebrows is it any wonder that beauty has now became completely distorted.

It only takes a quick scroll on an Instagram feed to see thousands of images of surgically enhanced faces filtered to perfection, this trend is now featured on the high street as the number of young people having cosmetic surgeries is on the rise. It is now a common sight to see young girls walking around with overly plumped up lips, fake eyelashes and of course the mermaid mane of hair extensions.

Gone are the days when just a few coats of mascara, a little bit of lipstick and blusher were deemed as the normal beauty regime among the masses. Now it has turned into a mini make up transformation which requires around 10 products before application of any make up even begins. The aim now is not to enhance natural features with makeup, it is to completely transform facial features so much so that when the makeup is removed the person looks like a totally different person.

Cosmetic procedures are becoming the new norm and much more socially acceptable, making it so much easier and justifiable for people to simply erase any imperfections they may have. Cosmetic surgery is no longer being indulged by only Hollywood celebrities it has now filtered down to the average person, hence the reason why there are cosmetic clinics popping up all over the place. Many reality tv stars and social media influencers are regularly endorsed to promote such procedures which again makes it seem more acceptable and becomes a standard add on to a monthly facial.

The constant need to take selfies and a dozen photos before getting that perfect shot is creating a culture of self-obsessed individuals who consume themselves obsessing over their appearance which in my opinion is border lining on extremely unhealthy behavior. People are validating themselves by their outward appearance therefore it is very alluring to change any flaws they may see, as then their self-worth will increase in their eyes. Beauty has become confusing for many people, as influencers who have platforms with huge followings many being impressionable young girls are hiding behind a fake mask. They are creating an illusion of beauty, as they fail to reveal to many of their followers that their perfect faces are the work of a highly skilled surgeon.

Beauty can now be bought, so in many cases the size of your bank account is what will determine how you mark up on the beauty stakes. The phrase; “There is no ugly people in the world, only poor people” is becoming very fitting in this day and age, as people achieve the most perfect doll like face through visiting cosmetic surgeons. In other words, people are now buying their face, removing all their original features and ultimately wiping out the characteristics that made them who they are.

Imperfections and flaws are what make people beautiful as cliche as that may sound it is the truth and it has been lost in this new fake reality. There has to be an end to this beauty obsession and a new focus of turning inwards and focusing on inner beauty. After all beauty really is skin deep. True beauty cannot be bought nor can it be painted on in the morning. It shines through and is a million times more mesmerizing than a perfect face, it overrides a person’s appearance and ironically is what makes someone appear beautiful. This type of beauty cannot be found in a carefully altered image or payed for on a trip to the cosmetic clinic. It can only be seen and felt when in the presence of someone who has a beautiful soul and contagious personality.

How much easier and more self-fulfilling would it be to simply focus on improving what is on the inside and using this as a bench mark or reflection of how beautiful someone is. In the grand scheme of things, a pretty face and perfect body can only go so far. Sooner or later people see past that and discover the real person inside regardless of the painted mask on the outside. So is it really worthwhile to spend hours upon hours obsessing over looks and which latest beauty product or procedure to get next in the quest for ultimate perfection?
